During our recent visit to Kampala, Uganda, for the Global Church Network Summit, we had the privilege of meeting Apostle Prince Chemungus—a national leader whose passion for children from hard places is nothing short of extraordinary.
Pastor Prince ministers in one of the poorest areas of Kampala, but what he is accomplishing through his church is truly remarkable. Out of a deep love for vulnerable children, he has created an ad hoc foster care ministry that is both innovative and deeply impactful.
A Church Becomes a Refuge
Using rooms within his church, Pastor Prince offers space to single mothers with children. But his model includes a unique and challenging caveat:
A mother may receive a room for herself and her children—if she is also willing to take in a child from the street.
This bold strategy has already transformed lives. Eleven children have been rescued from the streets under this ministry. Pastor Prince has even opened his own home to provide care, demonstrating his radical commitment to living out the Gospel in action.
Multiplying the Model
Pastor Prince’s vision does not stop with his own congregation. He has already recruited more than 10 other pastors who are eager to replicate this model of church-based foster care. His leadership is sparking a movement that has the potential to reshape how vulnerable children in Kampala—and beyond—find safety, love, and hope.
Haven of Hope Partnership
Haven of Hope International’s Orphan Care Training Institute (OCTI) is honored to come alongside Apostle Prince and these pastors. In November, OCTI will provide Foster Care Training: One Church – One Child, equipping these leaders with the tools and support needed to expand this groundbreaking approach.
A Powerful and Innovative Path Forward
Apostle Prince Chemungus embodies the heart of James 1:27—caring for orphans in their distress. His radical approach proves that even in areas of extreme poverty, the local church can become a powerful force for transformation.
We are inspired by his courage, his creativity, and his unwavering passion for children who have no place to call home. And we are excited to see how this partnership will continue to grow—bringing hope, one child at a time.
