TRAUMA CARE: The Healing Begins Here
At Haven of Hope International (HOHI) we understand the impact trauma has on brain development. Since 2015 our staff has been continually trained to deliver knowledgeable, attuned, and consistent care to the children we rescue from severely traumatizing life situations such as physical and sexual abuse, extreme poverty, and abandonment.
Angela Bryan, HOHI Director of Sponsorship and Child Development, explains, ” Using Trauma-Informed Care in orphanages and group homes can make the difference between BREAKING the cycle of poverty and abuse versus just PAUSING it for a few years. While physical and emotional care are important for the health of any child, for orphans, it is critical. Our TBRI®, (Trust-Based Relational Intervention) training focuses on providing children with counseling, love, and trauma care so they can lead a happy, healthy life.”
HOHI is proud to announce that Wanjiru and John Kanyoni, directors of HOHI’s partner home, Watu Wa Maana in Ruiru, Kenya, have been selected as recipients of a scholarship from TCU’s Trust Based Relationship Intervention (TBRI) training to earn a trainer’s certification. Out of 250 applicants, Wanjiru and John stood out for their commitment to serving street children in their community.
Through our amazing and generous donors, Haven of Hope International will provide funds to cover tuition, travel, accommodation, and food expenses related to the training in Salt Lake City. Upon completion, John and Wanjiru will join the Hope Training Team to bring the TBRI training to African orphanages under HOHI. They will also translate the material into Swahili for use in training other orphanages in Africa.
Angela Bryan, HOHI’s certified TBRI trainer, will play a crucial role in the training of Wanjiru and John. Alice Sweet, HOHI’s the founder and CEO, will also provide support while they are in the USA. Alice is dedicated to raising the standard of orphan care and often challenges the directors and children to dream. During her first meeting with Wanjiru, Wanjiru expressed her dream of receiving trauma training.
The impact of this training will be far-reaching, and HOHI invites others to join the growing Family of Hope and help this vital program with a one-time gift or become a program sponsor with a monthly commitment that provides ongoing monthly support and coaching. Together we are setting a new standard in orphan care by providing ongoing physical and emotional support tailored to each child’s specific needs.
