One of the most exciting developments at Operation Smile Children’s Home in Poona, Trinidad, has been the flourishing of our raised-bed farming and hydroponics projects. These initiatives are more than just gardens—they are classrooms of hope, sustainability, and opportunity for our children.
Skills, Sustainability, and Income
What started as a small project is now transforming lives in remarkable ways:
- A past resident has already found steady employment through farming.
- Our current children are gaining hands-on training in agriculture, learning skills that will prepare them for independence and self-sufficiency.
- Beyond seasonings, we are now successfully producing cucumbers, kale, and tomatoes, with plans to add another grow box to expand production.
Building Community Connections
The farming project has also connected Operation Smile to the wider community. By networking with other local hydroponic growers, we are exchanging resources, sharing produce, and building supportive relationships that extend far beyond our home.
More Than Food - It's Hope
These agricultural initiatives do more than provide food and income. They teach responsibility, teamwork, and the value of sustainable living. Even more importantly, they inspire hope by showing our children that with hard work and opportunity, they can build a better future for themselves and their community.
At Operation Smile, every seed planted is a seed of hope. And with your support, this garden of possibilities will continue to grow.
