Back to School, Back to Hope: How Education Is Changing Lives at Refugio de Esperanza

At Refugio de Esperanza in Bolivia, the start of a new school year feels like a fresh sunrise. Class schedules are posted, uniforms are pressed, and the house hums with the kind of anticipation only children can create—equal parts excitement, nerves, and big dreams. This year, Director “Mama Gladys” couldn’t stop smiling as she watched every child step forward ready to learn. Gladys understands that children coming to the home are usually way behind or have no educational background. Her gratitude was heartfelt and specific: because of Haven of Hope International (HOHI), each student arrived at the starting line equipped to succeed.

A Backpack Can Be a Turning Point

For many children, school begins with simple essentials—yet those essentials are often the biggest barrier. That’s why, every new school year, HOHI ensures each child at Refugio de Esperanza receives what they need: backpacks, notebooks, uniforms, and shoes. It’s practical support, but it carries a deeper message: You matter. Your education matters. Your future matters.

This consistent support means HOHB can provide essential educational materials and funding for studies—removing the pressure and uncertainty that so often disrupt a child’s progress. When tutoring is needed, when school fees arise, or when extra help becomes necessary, sponsors and donors step in to cover those costs. The result is stability: a safe learning environment where children can focus on growth instead of worry.

At Refugio de Esperanza, education is not treated like a privilege that might come and go. It is nurtured as a foundation—one that allows children who have known loss to experience security, routine, and the confidence that comes from being prepared.

Vocational Training That Builds Sustainability

Haven of Hope Bolivia is also cultivating hands-on pathways for success through vocational training in sewing, woodworking, and bread baking. Residents receive mentoring as they learn to create products that can be sold—turning training into opportunity and opportunity into sustainability.

These sales help generate ongoing funding to support the home’s needs, while also teaching residents valuable lessons in craftsmanship, responsibility, teamwork, and entrepreneurship. It’s empowerment with real-world impact.

A Community of Hope

Mama Gladys’ joy at the beginning of this school year reflects something bigger than supplies and scholarships. It reflects what happens when faithful supporters stand with vulnerable children year after year. When education is protected, potential is unlocked. And when potential is unlocked, hope becomes contagious.

Because of HOHI and its partners, the children of Refugio de Esperanza are not just going back to school. They are stepping into a future filled with possibility.
