A Historic Visit: Church of God General Overseer Dr. Gary Lewis Visits Refugio de Esperanza, Bolivia

At the recent Latin America Bolivian National Convention, the highlight came with the presence of the Church of God International General Overseer, Dr. Gary Lewis. Dr. Lewis preached a powerful message that inspired leaders and believers across the region. Yet, one of the most meaningful moments of his trip took place not in the convention hall, but in a home filled with hope—Refugio de Esperanza Bolivia.

For over 20 years, Haven of Hope International has partnered with directors Gladys and Marco Aldana to transform this campus into a safe haven for some of Bolivia’s most vulnerable children. What began as a small cottage built during a mission trip has grown into a thriving flagship orphanage, a place where children find security, education, and a future.

Dr. Lewis’ visit marked history, as he became the first sitting General Overseer to travel to Bolivia and, significantly, the first to step foot on a Haven of Hope International orphanage campus. His presence was more than ceremonial—it was a powerful statement of love, recognition, and commitment to children who too often feel forgotten.

During his time at Refugio de Esperanza, Dr. Lewis met with directors Gladys and Marco, spoke with staff, and listened to the voices of the children whose lives have been changed through this ministry. He toured the recently renovated girls’ dorm and walked through the Rhoda Jarvis Dream Center and the boys’ dorm at the Joe Morici Campus—both of which stand as symbols of God’s provision and the faithfulness of partners who believe every child deserves hope.

This historic visit was more than a milestone—it was a reminder that the Church of God, through its global family, continues to stand alongside orphans and vulnerable children. As Haven of Hope International celebrates over two decades of partnership in Bolivia, the visit of Dr. Lewis reinforces the vision: every child should have the opportunity to dream, grow, and thrive in a safe and loving environment.
