In the Embakasi Pipeline District of Nairobi, Kenya, life can be crowded, noisy, and difficult. For vulnerable children, the challenges are even greater. Many children who come to JEHO Safe Home have been abandoned, rescued from the streets, brought by government agencies, or referred from hospitals. They arrive carrying more than the need for food, clothing, and shelter. Many also arrive carrying deep educational gaps, emotional wounds, and years of missed opportunities.
That is why Haven of Hope International is placing special emphasis this year on The Learning Lab Initiative.
JEHO Safe Home, also known as John E. Halgrim Orphanage, is led by Pastors Miriam and Peter Njuguna in partnership with Glory of Christ Church. Their mission is to rescue abandoned and vulnerable children while providing a strong Christian foundation, emotional support, education, physical care, medical care, and social development. The home currently serves approximately 46 to 50 children, ranging from infants to young adults.
For children from hard places, education is not simply about schoolbooks and exams. It is about restoration. Many children come into care with little or no formal schooling and are often years behind their peers. Before they can thrive academically, they need safety, structure, encouragement, and someone who believes in their future. JEHO is already working to provide that support through committed leaders, social work, and tutoring.
The Learning Lab Initiative will help take that support to the next level
The vision is to create a dedicated place where children can study, read, receive tutoring, use educational technology, and build confidence in their ability to learn. For a child who has struggled in school, a quiet space with the right tools can become a doorway to hope. Tablets, laptops, internet access, reading resources, educational software, and a trained tutor can help close learning gaps and open new possibilities.
This is especially important in an inner-city environment where distractions are constant and resources are limited. The Learning Lab Initiative will give children more than a room. It gives them focus. It gives them dignity. It tells them, “Your education matters. Your future matters. God has a plan for your life.”
Haven of Hope International’s broader mission is to help orphan care homes move from “barely surviving to thriving” by raising the standard of care through proven programs, training, and sustainable strategy. At JEHO, the Learning Lab Initiative is a practical expression of that mission. It connects rescue with restoration and restoration with preparation for the future.
When children are equipped to learn, they are also ready to dream again. They begin to see beyond survival. They discover gifts, talents, and opportunities that may have once felt impossible.
This year, through the Learning Lab Initiative, HOHI is inviting partners to help JEHO Safe Home build a stronger educational foundation for every child in their care. Together, we can help children who were once overlooked become students who are encouraged, equipped, and prepared to step into their God-given destiny.
