Watu Wa Maana: The Learning Lab Initiative for Very Important Futures

In Ruiru, Kenya, there is a children’s home with a name that speaks dignity over every child: Watu Wa Maana, which means “very important people.” For children who have known abandonment, poverty, trauma, or life on the streets, that name is more than a title. It is a message of restoration: you matter, your life has value, and your future is worth investing in.

For more than two decades, Director Wanjiru Kanyoni has served children from hard places with faith, compassion, and perseverance. What began as ministry to street children grew into a home where children could receive safety, shelter, food, discipleship, education, and the consistent care of loving adults.

At Haven of Hope International, we believe orphan care is not only about rescuing a child from danger. It is also about restoring hope, rebuilding identity, and equipping children for the future God has prepared for them. One of the most important ways we do that is through education.

Many children entering care arrive with significant educational deficiencies. Some have missed months or even years of school. Others have struggled academically because instability, hunger, trauma, and survival needs made learning nearly impossible. When a child has not felt safe, school can become overwhelming. Reading may be delayed. Math skills may be weak. Homework may feel discouraging. Confidence may be low.

But at Watu Wa Maana, the story does not end with what a child has missed. The team works faithfully to help children study, grow, heal, and discover their God-given potential. Yet they cannot do this work alone. Children who are already behind need more than encouragement. They need tutoring. They need books. They need technology. They need a quiet place to study. They need access to educational resources that help them catch up, keep up, and dream beyond their current circumstances.

That is why HOHI is focusing this year on The Learning Lab Initiative

A Learning Lab is more than a room with computers. It is a place of possibility. It is a quiet, structured, resource-rich environment where children can receive the academic support they need to succeed. For children who have known chaos, a Learning Lab offers structure. For children who have experienced rejection, it offers encouragement. For children who have fallen behind, it offers a pathway forward.

The Learning Lab Initiative at Watu Wa Maana would provide tablets, laptops, educational software, books, reading materials, personal guidance from a tutor support, and a dedicated study space. These tools can help strengthen reading, math, research, digital literacy, and homework completion. Just as important, the Learning Lab Initiative tells every child, “You are worth the investment.”

Education is a critical part of restoration. A child may be rescued from the streets, but without educational support, the future can still feel uncertain. A child may be safe in a home, but without tutoring and resources, school can remain a place of frustration instead of opportunity.

Imagine a child who once wandered the streets now sitting at a desk, reading with confidence. Imagine a teenager who once believed school was impossible now preparing for vocational training or higher education. Imagine a young person discovering they are not forgotten, not behind forever, and not limited by where they started. Your support can make it a reality.

That is the power of hope equipped with practical tools. Watu Wa Maana has already shown what happens when faith, love, and perseverance come together. Now, through The Learning Lab Initiative, we have the opportunity to help these “very important people” take the next step toward a brighter future.

Because when a child learns, hope grows. And when hope grows, lives are changed, changed for generations.
