Over the weekend, Araceli Nicole celebrated a birthday! Widely celebrated among Latinos, the quinceañera marks an important milestone in a girl’s life. Part birthday party, part rite of passage, it symbolizes a girl’s entrance into womanhood when turning 15.

Araceli Nicole is sweet and kind hearted. She cares deeply about others and very loving towards the other children at Refugio de Esperanza.

She wants to work at nurseries and early education places for children 5 years old and younger.

Dozens of women at the Woman 2 Woman (W2W) meeting spent the morning learning more about the global orphan crisis. The group (W2W) opened their hearts to Haven of Hope International to learn about the realities more than 153 million unadopted orphaned children face.

W2W is a monthly women’s bible study group led by Colleen Stouder in Fort Myers, Florida.

HOHI Founder, Alice Skaff, shared some of the most urgent requests with the group. Some of those needs included children’s dental needs and school tuition help in Bolivia, Kitchen renovations for better sanitary standards in Nairobe as well as the support needed to continue building homes for orphaned children in Peru.

Haven of Hope International is focused on the unadopted children of the world. This means 99% of the children in foster/orphan care that may not be adopted.

Our pillars of purpose are RESCUE, LOVE RESTORE and EQUIP.

Builders of Hope play a huge part in this mission. This group helps HOHI complete special project needs for children to have a safe learning and living environment.

If you choose to be a Builder of Hope, this means you would like to donate your gifts, talents, skills, and/or resources to help complete projects. This may look like helping build a dorm or a new kitchen, maybe restoring a bathroom that needs a vital upgrade, etc.

Join the team

At HOHI we are determined to be the Family of Hope to these kids and in doing so, set a new standard of orphan care. Thanks to Men And Women of Action, in July, we were able to start building one of eight dorms in Pucallpa, Peru.

The goal is to build a total of 8 dorms to house 8 children per dorm. The completion date is dependent on funding.

“I feel honored that God chose me out of all of the people he could have chosen to help lead this,” project team leader, Michael Alton, said. “I am so thrilled to do His work.”

When a team went to Peru in July, they found children living in unbelievably heartbreaking conditions.

Several children were found sleeping in run down shacks with the roof falling in, no running water or electricity in a swampy area of Pucallpa.

If you would like to donate towards Builders of Hope to fulfill project needs, please click the button below.

This picture was taken at our flagship orphanage in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. While it’s clear this child needs immediate dental treatment, this is a reality for many orphans around the world.

At Haven of Hope Boliva, there is a local dentist, Dr. Regina, that visits the home twice a year. She is able to give children most treatments at a lower cost than any dentist in the area.

Orphanage directors tell us Dr. Regina does an amazing job at a very low price. For example, a cleaning for a child in Bolivia may cost about 80 ($11.58) Bolivianos at a public clinic or up to 200 Bolivianos ($28.95) at a private practice. Dr. Regina only charges 35 Bolivianos ($5.07) per child and completes any cleanings or extractions at the orphanage. This is a tremendous help since transportation may sometimes be difficult. She also applies a flouride treatment that lasts a year and sealants if necessary.

Dr. Regina has supported Refugio de Esperanza (HOHB) for several years. Her initial visit consists of a cleaning and discussing a treatment plan with directors for each child. During this visit, she figures out what type of dental work each child will need. Unfortunatley, many of the children at our flagship orphanage have pretty extensive dental needs.

How you can help

Haven of Hope International is in need for dental work sponsors to help the children we love. As you read, for a little over $5 per child, we are able to help provide basic dental check-ups for a child. For a few dollars more, you could help provide the needed treatments like the flouride varnish that helps prevent tooth decay.

There are dozens of children that would be grateful to know they have your support. Would you please consider helping us these children? Please click here to fill out our contact form and let us know you would like to help. You can also send a donation via Venmo. Make sure to send it to @HavenofHopeIntl and write “dental fund” in the comment.

Other ways to help

Dr. Regina has asked us to help her replace some of the worn out equipment she uses everyday.

The cost for the equipment would be $840. Another request is for a sterilizer or autoclave sterilizer. We are working on getting pricing for this equipment. She currently sterilizes her equipment elsewhere.

She has been a tremendous blessing to the orphanage. We are hoping to bless her in return. Please keep in mind this will also benefit the children – our children – she helps every year.

She is also in need of flouride varnish to continue helping the children we love.

If you are a dentist or know of a dentist that would be willing to become a dental sponsor and help orphans with basic needs like dental care, please fill out our contact form by clicking here.

Dr. Regina sends a warm welcome to everyone in the states. In the video, she explains that she is getting ready to do a routine dental check up. She will determine what type of works needs to be done.

We have received a list of children that need dental help and how much it would cost to cover the expense.

Eddy – $23.14

Jose – $23.14

Oscar – $23.14

Javier – $26.03

Estefania – $7.23

Maria – $7.23

Adriana – $7.23

Erica – $7.23

Ayda – $11.57

Guadalupe – $11.57

Fernanda – $7.23

Have you heard?

We are honored to announce that our very own Executive Director and Founder, Alice Robinson Skaff, has been chosen to be a mentor for the Girls Going Places Conference.

Alice’s heart truly is for the beautiful Southwest Florida community and beyond!

What is Girls Going Places?

The Girls Going Places® Program was created and piloted in Southwest Florida in 1999 to educate young women about the financial and entrepreneurial opportunities available to them. Girls Going Places®Entrepreneurship Conferences are designed to encourage financial literacy and educate teen girls about starting businesses; managing personal.

The conference is part of Alliance Financial Group’s mission to champion community initiatives and programs that promote the importance of planning to maximize wealth and reach financial aspirations.

During the Girls Going Places Conference, students will meet with prominent women business owners and business professionals who will act as Conference Mentors for the day. These women will lead the students through a series of interactive activities and discussions centered on starting and running a business, facilitate small roundtable group discussions, answer questions, and share information about their challenges and successes in running a business or working in the business world.

In our changing economy, financial independence and security are on the minds of young people who have watched as their parents are “down-sized” and friends worry about finding a job. The overriding objective of the conference, therefore, is to teach young girls how to take control of their financial futures through entrepreneurship.

We are thrilled Alice will be imparting her knowledge to so many young girls in Southwest Florida.

The start of the new year is the end of summer for children at our flagship orpahange in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. 2019 was quite an incredible year. We witnessed God do the impossible. Hearts were healed. Promises were fulfilled. We were expectant then and we are expectant now for what He has in store.
Every month, we get updates from our amazing team at Refugio de Esperanza.

We wanted to share the first one of 2020 with you.

Devotional time is a priority on the Haven of Hope Bolivia campus. Discipleship is key! This picture was taken during devotional time right before a review session the campus put on in preparation for the new school year. The review session walks the children through what to expect with the new school year and helps get them excited to learn!

It’s beautiful to hear how God is moving in the lives of these beautiful children. We have intentionally made sure there is a time for testimonies during discipleship time. The children are encouraged to share their testimonies of what God is doing in their life during summer break.

Baking is always fun! We try to incorporate fun learning activities for the kids. You never know how an activity may impact a child in the future. You may be looking at two future chefs or baking extraordinares! We carved out some time to teach the children how to make cookies from scratch.

Some of the children may have older siblings that may have also called Haven of Hope Bolivia home. We make sure siblings are reunited often and welcome visits from family members.

A day at the park with nearly 50 children is no easy task, but it’s so much fun! The campus had a routine pest control visit scheduled so the children and staff spent the day at the park while a crew was completing the fumigation process. The staff makes sure there are plenty of snacks and everyone stays hydrated.

Before each new school year starts, our team makes sure all supplies needed on a daily basis are in stock and distributed.

The on-campus educators help manage the supplies for the younger children (toilet paper, laundry detergent, floor cleaners, shampoo, etc.)

The older girls, however, manage their own supplies to create independence and teach them to administer their things well. The girls in this picture are golding an iron and a pot to boil water they can use in their dorm room.

Every month, educators include a value with their comprehensive reading skills assignment.

This helps children grow with their comprehensive reading and also learn more about important values. This month’s value is respect.

Over the summer, typing classes were offered for the children to enhance their skills. This helps tremendously throughout the school year. Many of the children love this activity and some children participated almost every day over the summer. We made sure they took turns with their peers.

The staff is working to determine the plans for ongoing typing classes. Right now they’re trying to figure out if it’s even possible to fit into the children’s school year schedules.

The computer room is always available in the afternoons for homework assignments that require computers.

God gave us his first and best fruit — his son Jesus. The children are always encouraged to give their best including wearing their best sunday attire for church. Our young boys are wearing their Sunday best and are all ready to participate in church services. Aren’t they just the absolute cutest?

The children graduated from bible class this summer. In 2019, our kids attended bible class every sunday at a church nearby. Iglesia Vida Abundante (Abundant Life Church) hosted bible class weekly.
This year, discipleship and church will be held at the chapel on the Haven of Hope Bolivia campus.

The chidren we love and serve love being kids! A favorite this summer: Trips to the pool. We’re thankful for opportunities like this one that was made possible thanks to support from our local community. Experiences like this are often a first for many children that come to HOHB.

Help us congratulate Luz Marina! She graduated from highschool this summer. Luz Marina is 18 years old and has been living at HOHB for 4 years. She has 2 sisters who live at HOHB, too.

Right now she is working towards fulfilling her dream of studying a technical career and becoming the best computer systems engineer around.

At HOHB, we make sure our teens are equipped what the necessary training and skills to be successful adults. We are so proud of the the obstacles Luz Marina has faced and all the hard work she has put forth to complete her her high school education.

Monday, February 3rd was the first day of the 2020 school year in Bolivia!  Thank you for fund-raising to cover the outstanding school costs from 2019 and for your support so far this school year.  We are also grateful for a donation of school supplies we received from a local donor.

Last week, we received a school supply donation.  Our staff estimates it’s nearly $300 worth of supplies.

An update from the Ground:

Michael Toppel (blue shirt) gave us a tour of the work done by the Mayan Families Foundation. The foundation is bringing sustainability and vocational programs to the people of Panajachel (Guatemala). We are investigating and dreaming about equipping homes with similar workshops. The workshops would include working with wood and welding to teach vocational skills to our children. This would be incorporated in our sustainability programs.

It was good to see a well organized program to learn how to efficiently set up our program. Everything from how they organize their wood, maintain their tools and organize volunteers. It was beautiful to see many retired people from the states serving with their time and talents helping this friendly and welcoming community.

Michael will be traveling to Bolivia in March with us to help expand what Judy Cutler started last March at our flagship orphanage with wood for our Products of Hope Program. Michael’s skill and knowledge will take the program to a new level. We are so excited for this opportunity because we are constantly looking for people who are willing to share their gifts and talents for the benefit of the children.

Today we are going to be visiting Casa Shalom to look at their wood workshop. We are hoping to invite people to get involved with their program in Guatemala or in Bolivia. We will also be looking for somebody interested in helping set up a welding program in Bolivia.

We’re encouraged to see what volunteers and people can do for a community by sharing their gifts and talents. We are asking people to pray about how they can help our children that have no family. This is an amazing work that they’ve done here.

CLEWISTON, FL. — Eleven people faced their fears Saturday, January 18, 2019 in Clewiston.

The “Jump for Hope” fundraiser raises money for the Global Hope Expansion Campaign.

Supporting for the campaign helps Haven of Hope International – a nonprofit working to rescue and support orphans around the world.

The founder of the organization, Alivia Skaff, says jumping for hope sends an encouraging message that anyone can use.

“It may look scary, but you can face your fears and you can do amazing things. We did it. We were free falling.”

The goal is to raise $14,000 dollars. At the time of Saturday’s jump, they had collected a little over $4,300.
